Media Walls and Entertainment Units

The difference between a good media wall and a bad one is almost entirely invisible: where the cables run, how the equipment breathes, and whether anyone can reach the things that need reaching.

01Overview

The problems these solve

A media wall is a technical problem wearing a decorative face. The visible part is straightforward joinery. The part that determines whether you are happy with it in three years is heat, access and cable routing — and those are decided before anything is manufactured.

We design around the specific equipment you own or intend to buy: screen size and mount type, whether there is a soundbar or in-wall speakers, how many boxes need power and ventilation, and whether a fireplace is going into the composition. Then we draw it, and you can see exactly what you are getting.

The most common brief is simply "hide the cables". A wall-mounted television with a visible bundle of cables running to a sideboard undoes the effect of an otherwise finished room, and once the wall is closed up it is difficult to fix.

The second is equipment that overheats or cannot be reached. A games console or receiver in a sealed cabinet will thermally throttle, and a box with no line of sight cannot take a remote signal unless that has been planned for.

The third is proportion. A 75-inch screen on a bare wall dominates a room. Set into a composition with storage, shelving and a defined surround, the same screen reads as one element among several.

02Configurations

What this usually looks like

Most projects settle into one of these. They are starting points for the conversation rather than a menu.

  • 01

    Full-wall media composition

    Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry across the entire wall with the screen recessed into a panelled field, closed storage below and open display above. The most integrated option, and the one that best absorbs a large screen.

  • 02

    Floating console with upper detail

    A wall-mounted lower unit with clear floor beneath, which makes a smaller room read as larger and simplifies cleaning. Requires a fixing plan appropriate to the wall.

  • 03

    Fireplace and screen combination

    Linear electric fireplace below or beside the screen, with the clearances taken from the fireplace manufacturer's specification rather than assumed. Heat management above the unit is the critical detail here.

  • 04

    Concealed-screen cabinetry

    Doors, a sliding panel or a lift mechanism that hides the screen when it is not in use — usually chosen in formal rooms and primary bedrooms.

  • 05

    Condo-scale entertainment unit

    A compact composition for a shallower wall, typically 350 to 400 millimetres deep, with the equipment consolidated into one ventilated bay and the rest given over to storage.

  • 06

    Basement theatre millwork

    Equipment cabinetry, acoustic panel framing and riser detailing, coordinated with the audio-visual installer rather than working around them afterwards.

04Materials and finishes

The choices that matter for this work

Dark, matte finishes reduce reflection around a screen and are usually the better choice on the field directly behind it. High-gloss looks striking in photographs and shows every fingerprint and every reflected light source in practice — we will say so before you choose it.

The door is roughly eighty per cent of what you see, and it is the decision that sets the character of the whole room. These are the four directions most projects settle into.

  • Shaker

    A five-piece frame around a recessed panel, typically a 57 to 70 millimetre rail. The default for a reason: it suits almost every house and dates slowly.

  • Slim shaker

    The same construction with a narrower frame, around 35 to 45 millimetres. Reads more contemporary and gives a slightly larger panel, which matters on narrow doors.

  • Slab

    A flat, frameless front. The most contemporary option and the least forgiving — there is nowhere for a poor finish or an uneven substrate to hide.

  • Reeded and fluted

    Vertical grooves that catch light and add texture. Excellent on an island or a feature run; heavy across an entire kitchen, and harder to clean.

What we would tell you

  • A shaker door with a wide rail on a narrow 300-millimetre cabinet leaves a very small panel. On runs with many narrow doors, a slim shaker usually looks better proportioned.
  • Slab doors show every substrate imperfection and every fingerprint in a gloss finish. In matte, they are one of the easiest surfaces to live with.
  • Mixing two door styles in one room works when there is a clear reason — for example slab on the island and shaker on the perimeter. Mixing without a reason reads as indecision.

These are representative of the directions we work in, not a stocked catalogue. Colours shown on a screen are approximations — we confirm what is actually available for your project and put a physical sample in your hands before you commit to anything.

05Before you commit

Things worth settling early

Each of these is straightforward at drawing stage and expensive or impossible afterwards. We raise them; you decide.

    Set the screen height from where you sit

    The centre of the screen should sit near seated eye level for comfortable viewing, which is usually lower than people expect and lower than a mantel would place it. We work this out from your seating position, not from a rule of thumb.

  2. 02

    Equipment needs airflow, and airflow needs a path

    A closed cabinet holding a receiver or console requires ventilation at both the bottom and the top so air can move through. Vented door panels, a rear plenum or a small quiet fan all work; a sealed box does not.

  3. 03

    Remote control signals need line of sight or a repeater

    If the equipment is behind a solid door, plan for an infrared repeater or specify glazed or acoustically open panels. Deciding this after installation means drilling through a finished front.

  4. 04

    Fireplace clearances are not negotiable

    Every electric fireplace has a published minimum clearance to combustible material above it. That figure sets the position of the shelf or screen above, and we design from the specification sheet.

  5. 05

    Concrete condo walls change the fixing strategy

    A heavy floating unit on a concrete or block wall needs the right anchors, and some buildings restrict what may be drilled. Where fixing is limited we design the unit to carry its load to the floor.

  6. 06

    Get the electrical in before the cabinetry

    Outlets behind the screen and inside the equipment bay have to be roughed in first. We provide the locations; a licensed electrician does the work.

Media walls: what people ask

Can you hide the cables completely?

Within the cabinetry, yes — cables run in a designed chase from the screen position down to the equipment bay. Running cables inside the wall itself is electrical work and needs a licensed electrician, which we coordinate rather than perform. If in-wall routing is not possible, the cabinetry can be designed with a concealed vertical chase that achieves the same visual result.

How deep does a media wall need to be?

It depends on what is going in it. A unit holding only a soundbar and a streaming box can work at around 300 millimetres. Once a receiver or console is involved, 400 to 450 millimetres is more realistic, and the equipment bay needs to be deeper than the equipment to allow for cable bend behind it.

Can you build around a fireplace that is already installed?

Yes, provided we can confirm the make and model so the published clearances are respected. If the fireplace is gas rather than electric, the clearances are stricter and any work near the appliance must involve the appropriate licensed trade.

Will a media wall work in a rental or a condo I might sell?

A floor-standing or floor-bearing composition can be removed with far less disruption than a fully integrated wall. If that flexibility matters, tell us early and we will detail it to be demountable, which changes the fixing approach but very little about how it looks.

Do you supply the television or the sound system?

No. We design and build the cabinetry around equipment you supply, and we coordinate with your audio-visual installer so the two pieces of work meet properly. Being clear about that boundary saves a lot of confusion on installation day.
