Built-In Cabinetry and Shelving
Built-ins are the most direct way to turn unused wall into storage that looks like it was always part of the house.
The walls people most often want to reclaim
A built-in is defined by its edges. Freestanding furniture has a gap at the top, a gap at the side, and a shadow underneath. A built-in meets the ceiling, meets the walls, and meets the floor — which means every one of those junctions has to be measured and scribed, because no room in the GTA is truly square.
The payoff is significant. A 300-millimetre-deep run of built-in shelving along one wall holds a surprising amount, takes almost nothing from the room, and can absorb the television, the books, the board games and the router in the same composition.
Alcoves beside a chimney breast are the classic case, and they are almost never the same width on both sides. Building them as a matched pair requires two different cabinet widths and a shared sightline — precisely the thing modular units cannot do.
Under-stair volume is the second. It is difficult, awkwardly shaped space that is usually wasted, and a set of graduated drawers or a pull-out unit turns it into the most useful storage in the house.
The third is the long blank wall in an open-plan living area, where a full run of low cabinetry with shelving above gives the room a defined edge as well as storage.

Closed base cabinets with open or glazed shelving above, built as a matched pair around a chimney breast. Shelf heights are set from what you actually store, and the two sides are drawn together so the sightlines align even when the widths differ.

Full-wall library shelving
Floor-to-ceiling shelving with a defined base, adjustable shelf positions and integrated lighting if wanted. Shelf spans are sized to avoid sagging under a real book load rather than a photographed one.

Under-stair storage
Graduated drawers, pull-out units or a concealed door into the full volume. Which of these makes sense depends entirely on the stair geometry, so this is always drawn from a site measurement.

Window seats and bay units
Bench seating with drawer or lift-top storage below, detailed to work with the existing window trim and any radiator underneath.

Display and glazed cabinetry
Glass-fronted upper units with adjustable shelves and concealed lighting, for the things you want visible and dust-free.

A run of cabinetry that hides a laundry stack, a mechanical panel or a workspace behind matched doors, so the room does not read as a utility area.

The choices that matter for this work
Most built-ins are painted MDF and plywood, which is stable, takes a clean finish and keeps cost sensible. Where a warmer look is wanted, a veneered carcass with solid edging gives the wood appearance without the movement of solid timber across a long span.
The door is roughly eighty per cent of what you see, and it is the decision that sets the character of the whole room. These are the four directions most projects settle into.
Shaker
A five-piece frame around a recessed panel, typically a 57 to 70 millimetre rail. The default for a reason: it suits almost every house and dates slowly.
Slim shaker
The same construction with a narrower frame, around 35 to 45 millimetres. Reads more contemporary and gives a slightly larger panel, which matters on narrow doors.
Slab
A flat, frameless front. The most contemporary option and the least forgiving — there is nowhere for a poor finish or an uneven substrate to hide.
Reeded and fluted
Vertical grooves that catch light and add texture. Excellent on an island or a feature run; heavy across an entire kitchen, and harder to clean.
What we would tell you
- A shaker door with a wide rail on a narrow 300-millimetre cabinet leaves a very small panel. On runs with many narrow doors, a slim shaker usually looks better proportioned.
- Slab doors show every substrate imperfection and every fingerprint in a gloss finish. In matte, they are one of the easiest surfaces to live with.
- Mixing two door styles in one room works when there is a clear reason — for example slab on the island and shaker on the perimeter. Mixing without a reason reads as indecision.

Things worth settling early

Measure what you are storing, not the wall
Shelf spacing is the single decision that determines whether a built-in works. Vinyl records, hardback books, paperbacks and storage baskets all want different heights. Bring us dimensions and the design follows.

Long shelves sag; the fix is designed in
An unsupported painted shelf over about 800 millimetres will visibly bow under books within a couple of years. Thicker material, a stiffening edge, or an extra vertical divider solves it — but it has to be decided before manufacturing.

Confirm what is inside the wall
Fixing into a concrete condo wall, a masonry chimney breast and a stud partition are three different problems. We check before the design assumes a fixing point that does not exist.

Leave the services reachable
Shut-off valves, clean-outs and electrical panels behind a built-in need a designed access route. It is easy at drawing stage and ugly afterwards.

Baseboard and ceiling junctions need a decision
The unit can sit on top of the existing baseboard, be notched around it, or replace it locally. Each looks different, and the right answer depends on the trim profile already in the room.

Built-ins: what people ask
How much of a built-in is standard and how much is bespoke?
The carcass construction is standardised because that is what makes it durable and affordable. The dimensions, proportions, shelf layout, door style and finish are all specific to your wall. That combination is where the value sits — you are not paying for a bespoke hinge, you are paying for a unit that actually fits.
Can built-ins be removed if I sell the house?
They are fixed cabinetry, so removal means patching and repainting the wall behind. In practice most buyers regard well-made built-ins as an asset and want them left. If you expect to move them, say so at the design stage and we can detail the unit to come apart more cleanly.
Can you build around a television and hide the cables?
Yes, and it is one of the most common requests. It needs an early conversation about screen size, mounting method, where the equipment lives and how it is ventilated. We cover this in more depth on our media wall page.
Will the built-in match my existing trim and doors?
It can. We take the existing baseboard and casing profiles into account, and the door style and paint colour can be matched to what is already in the room. A close paint match is realistic; matching an aged stained finish is much harder and we would be upfront about it.
Do you work in condos with restrictions on drilling?
Regularly. Concrete ceilings and post-tensioned slabs limit what can be fixed and where. We design the unit to be floor-bearing and wall-restrained rather than ceiling-hung when the building requires it, and we work within the property manager's rules on hours and access.
