Millwork is what happens when the cabinetry stops being furniture and starts being architecture — panelled walls, wrapped columns, coffered ceilings and joinery that reads as part of the building.

01Overview

What people actually ask us for

Architectural millwork covers the fixed woodwork that shapes a room: wall panelling, wainscoting, feature walls, applied mouldings, ceiling detail, integrated bench seating, stair and column treatments, and the transitions where all of those meet.

It is unforgiving work. A cabinet can be scribed to a wall and nobody sees the joint. A panelled wall has no hiding place — the reveal has to be consistent, the panel modules have to resolve at the corners, and the whole thing has to acknowledge the door casings and baseboards already in the room. That is why it is drawn before it is built.

The most common request is a feature wall in a principal room — usually a living room, dining room or primary bedroom — where the client wants the wall to have depth without it looking like a period pastiche in a contemporary house.

The second most common is continuity: a hallway that needs to connect a renovated kitchen to an older part of the house, or a condo where the developer trim is thin and cheap and undermines everything else that has been upgraded.

The third is problem-solving. A bulkhead that cannot be removed, a structural column in the middle of an open plan, an awkward stair landing. Millwork is often the most economical way to make an unavoidable element look deliberate.

02Configurations

What this usually looks like

Most projects settle into one of these. They are starting points for the conversation rather than a menu.

  • 01

    Wall panelling and wainscoting

    Full-height or dado-height panelling in flat-panel, raised-panel, applied-moulding or slatted formats. Module widths are set from the room, not from a standard sheet size, so panels resolve properly at corners and openings.

  • 02

    Feature and fireplace walls

    A single wall treated as a composition: panelled field, integrated shelving, concealed storage, and provision for a television or fireplace unit where required.

  • 03

    Ceiling detail

    Coffered and beamed ceilings, applied ceiling panels, and perimeter detail that hides an existing bulkhead. Ceiling work is where flatness tolerances matter most, so it is always measured on site.

    Trim, casing and baseboard upgrades

    Replacing thin builder trim with heavier profiles throughout a floor. Straightforward in principle, but the door casings, window returns and stair skirt all have to be reconciled.

    Slat and reeded surfaces

    Vertical slat walls, reeded panels and fluted columns. Popular, and easy to do badly — spacing, end conditions and the substrate colour behind the slats are what separate a good one from a flat one.

    Integrated seating and niches

    Window seats, banquettes, entry benches and recessed niches built into the panelling rather than placed against it.

    Columns, beams and bulkhead wraps

    Cladding for structural elements that cannot move, detailed so they read as part of the design rather than as a compromise.

04Materials and finishes

The choices that matter for this work

Painted MDF is the workhorse of panelling because it is dimensionally stable and takes a flat finish. Where a wood grain is wanted, veneered panel with solid edging is usually more stable than solid timber across a large wall. We will tell you which is appropriate for the wall in question.

Painted MDF is the workhorse of custom cabinetry because it is dimensionally stable and holds a flat, even colour that timber cannot. These are the families most projects choose from.

  • Warm white

    Reads soft rather than clinical under Toronto's low winter light, which cool whites do not.

  • Bone

    A step warmer again. Forgiving on older houses with existing cream trim.

  • Greige

    Neutral enough to sit with both warm and cool countertops, which is why it is so widely used.

  • Mushroom

    A mid-tone that hides daily marks noticeably better than a pale finish.

  • Deep clay

    Warm and grounded. Works well on a lower run with lighter uppers above.

  • Forest

    A strong colour that behaves like a neutral once it is on a whole run.

  • Charcoal

    Warm rather than blue-black. Reliable on islands and media walls.

  • Off-black

    Dramatic, and it shows dust. Best in matte and best in a room with good natural light.

What we would tell you

  • Look at any colour in the actual room, at the times of day you use it. North-facing GTA kitchens make cool greys read blue, and the same sample will look like a different colour in a west-facing room at five o'clock.
  • Matte finishes hide substrate imperfections and show fingerprints less than gloss. Gloss photographs beautifully and needs more upkeep than most households expect.
  • A two-tone kitchen usually works best with the darker colour below, which grounds the room. The reverse can be done deliberately but rarely happens by accident.

These are representative of the directions we work in, not a stocked catalogue. Colours shown on a screen are approximations — we confirm what is actually available for your project and put a physical sample in your hands before you commit to anything.

05Before you commit

Things worth settling early

Each of these is straightforward at drawing stage and expensive or impossible afterwards. We raise them; you decide.

    Decide the finish route before manufacturing

    Factory-finished panels give a more even surface; site-painted panels let you match an existing wall colour exactly and hide fasteners more easily. Each has a real trade-off, and the choice affects the sequence of the whole job.

    Millwork exposes the state of the wall behind it

    A wall that is 15 millimetres out over its length will show as a tapering shadow line. We measure for this, and either shim, scribe, or tell you that a skim coat first is the better answer.

  3. 03

    Think about what has to come off later

    Panelling over a shut-off valve, an electrical panel or a data box needs a designed access point. Retrofitting one is always visible.

  4. 04

    Flooring and panelling have an order

    If new flooring is going in, the panelling usually follows it so the base detail sits correctly. Getting this backwards is one of the more common and more expensive sequencing errors.

    Condo walls are not all the same

    Demising walls and shear walls in concrete buildings limit fastening options and may have restrictions on what can be attached. Worth confirming with the property manager before the design is fixed.

09Questions

Architectural millwork: what people ask

Can panelling be installed over an existing wall, or does it need stripping?

In most cases it goes over the existing drywall, which keeps cost and disruption down. Baseboards usually come off, and sometimes casings, depending on how the panelling meets them. If the wall surface is badly damaged or heavily textured we will recommend preparation first rather than telegraphing the problem through the new work.

Will panelling make a small room feel smaller?

Not usually, if it is proportioned properly. The common failure is panel modules that are too small and too busy for the wall. In a small room we tend to use fewer, wider modules and a shallower reveal, and often the same colour as the wall so it reads as texture rather than as a separate element.

Do you paint the millwork or do I need a painter?

Both routes are available. Factory finishing gives the most consistent surface. Site painting is often chosen when the millwork has to match an existing wall colour or when a painter is already engaged for the room. We will quote either way and explain what changes.

Can you match the trim profile in an older house?

Frequently, yes. We take a profile section from an existing piece and have it reproduced. Exact matches are realistic for common historical profiles; genuinely unusual ones sometimes need a close approximation, and we would show you a sample before committing.

Is millwork suitable for a bathroom or basement?

It can be, with the right substrate. Standard MDF is a poor choice where moisture is likely. Moisture-resistant board or a different material selection handles those rooms properly, and it is a decision we make at the drawing stage rather than on site.
